When something goes wrong

How you react matters. A calm first response makes it easier for your child to ask for help again.

RESPOND, DON’T REACT

1

REASSURE

Thank your child for telling you. Do not blame or immediately threaten to take away their device.

2

CHECK SAFETY

Are they being threatened, pressured or blackmailed? Is there any danger of a meeting or further contact?

3

KEEP KEY DETAILS

Note usernames, links, times and messages where safe. Never copy, forward or save suspected child sexual abuse images.

4

REPORT AND GET HELP

Use platform reporting tools where appropriate. For online sexual abuse or grooming, seek safeguarding/police advice and report to CEOP.

5

AGREE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Tell your child what you will do, who can help and how you will check in again.

IMMEDIATE DANGER? CALL 999. IF YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT A CHILD, SPEAK TO THE SCHOOL SAFEGUARDING TEAM.
